FAQS

Mucinex products do not contain the dye FD&C Red No. 3, but only color additives approved for use by the FDA.
Reckitt, manufacturer of Mucinex, is aware of recent press stating that certain generic and store brand versions of Mucinex, including ones sold at various retailers, contain carbomers made using benzene, a chemical known to be carcinogenic.

Please be advised that Mucinex, manufactured and sold by Reckitt, uses carbomer that is manufactured without the use of benzene.
Reckitt is aware of recent social media activity surrounding Mucinex and fertility. As a global leader in health and hygiene, we wish to clarify that Mucinex should only be used as intended and in line with usage instructions. The most common active ingredient in Mucinex products (guaifenesin) is indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to rid the bronchial passageways of bothersome mucus and make coughs more productive. Taking Mucinex for infertility constitutes off-label use. It should also be noted that guaifenesin is commonly used in combination with other active ingredients. Mucinex-D® for example contains pseudoephedrine, a nasal decongestant which should only be used for approved indications and carries specific risks. Taking medications outside their approved indications or without acknowledging all active ingredients may be harmful. In case of doubt we recommend a discussion with a healthcare professional. Please always read the label and safety information before taking any self-care medication.

Mucinex D and Maximum Strength Mucinex D contain the active ingredient pseudoephedrine (PSE), which is a nasal decongestant that relieves sinus pressure and congestion. This ingredient is also used in the illegal manufacturing of methamphetamine, commonly known as “meth”, a highly addictive stimulant. In 2006, Congress passed a law to stop the illegal use of PSE by banning the over-the-counter sales of cold products containing PSE, and limiting the monthly amount any individual could purchase. The product is stored in a secure location where consumers do not have direct access. An ID is required to purchase Mucinex D and Maximum Strength Mucinex D from your pharmacy.
