Inflammation and swelling of nasal mucus membranes, blood vessels and surrounding tissues cause nasal congestion. Mucus membrane swelling is mostly to blame for that plugged-up feeling, but thick mucus stuck in your nasal passages is at fault, too.

 

What Causes Swelling?

That swelling inside your nose can be caused by many agents, including:

  • Viral infections
  • Allergies
  • Environmental irritants (like smoke)

 

 

How to help clear a stuffy nose:

There are simple home remedies that can help clear mucus from your nasal passageways. If your stuffiness just won’t stop, try:

  • Drinking extra fluids (like water, teas, soups, etc.)  
  • Using a humidifier or vaporizer
  • Using a saline nasal spray or rinse
